John
Lennon’s song Imagine was and remains
to be one of the more appreciated song in this country. When writing this song
in 1971, John Lennon already had extrinsic ethos of the attention of the public
from his association with the Beatles. Set in this time period of great
political and social change, John Lennon used Imagine as a way to remind the
public to not hold on and base their lives on their material possessions and
instead live in the moment. With all this turmoil and change around him, where
did this inspiration or notion come from? It came from poet and co-composer of
the song Yoko Ono. Ono had written a poem titled Cloud Piece along with others
in his book Grapefruit and the sense of peace that this poem is what Lennon
created his song around. In addition, Lennon used inspiration from a Christian prayer
book and together created an idea of a human world where people aren’t divided
by politics or money or anything else and just live. Lennon’s fame in community
as well as his ideal posed in a pleasing ad desirable way in this song helped
contribute to the hippie movement and it’s effort for peace.

Richa I like the way you described the the song "Imagine" through the extrinsic ethos of the singer. Without listening to the song I got the overall message of the the song based on your description. I also believe that the singer used extrinsic ethos to compose is song through the "inspiration"/ research from another source- Ono

John Lennon's "Imagine" is an appropriate anthem for the hippie movement. The song is based mostly around lies and did not really accomplish anything in the political realm.

I appreciate your linking to Yoko Ono's poem and referencing to the Christian prayer book, as it is always interesting to see what, where, and who an artist gets his inspiration from. I can see how Lennon evoked such a peaceful and hopeful message from inspiration from the prayer book.
